James Elder Failing Mentally, Ends All Trouble By Suicide
James Elder, son-in-law of Anton A Strand of Briley, near Melville, suicided Monday afternoon on the Buffalo highway between Shawmut and Harlowton. He was last seen in Shawmut about noon of that day, and during the afternoon his body was discovered a few miles west of Shawmut by Mrs. Fischer of that place, who was driving an auto. When several miles out on the highway he stopped the car, sat down on a bank by the road, and committed the act by placing a 25-35 Winchester in his mouth and blowing the side of his head off. The remains were taken to Harlowton and prepared for burial. Undertaker J. A. Lowry driving to that place yesterday to bring the body here for funeral service at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon.
Elder had not been his best for several weeks and had been examined by a physician of Harlowton, who recommended that he be taken away for treatment for mental trouble he having, stated that he felt himself slipping. Two weeks ago Sheriff Brannin received word that Elder had disappeared from his home near Briley, and that officer started out to look for him. On the way out he was informed by Sherriff L. W. Clark of Harlowton that Elder was at the Crawford ranch, on the Musselshell, and seemed to be in fair shape. Elder was then taken home and all firearms with which he might injure himself were secreted. The auto was also disabled so that he could not drive it. However, he got to Shawmut some way later.
Elder had worked at times for several years at the celebrated Winnecook ranch, on the Milwaukee between Harlowton and Shawmut. He leaves a wife and three children. He was a World war veteran.
