John Cathey Barkley was the fourth of nine known children of James Knox Polk Barkley (1793-1868) and Delilah James Barkley (1791-1873), who married 22 Apr 1813 at Lincoln County, North Carolina.
It is believed that John first married to Mary Walker (did she go by "Peg"?) (1810-1843). Her grave marker inscription says there is an infant son buried at her feet (died in childbirth?) It is not believed they had any children that reached maturity.
After Mary died, John remarried to Elizabeth Julia Morrison (1811-1854) on 19 Dec 1844 at Iredell County, North Carolina. John and Elizabeth were the parents of three known children, namely:
1. James Morrison Barkley (1846-1922)
2. Mary Elizabeth Barkley Harkey (1849-1933)
3. John Calvin Barkley (1850-1925)
After Elizabeth died, John remarried to Sarah Amanda Boyd (1828-1869) in c1855 in presumably North Carolina. However at the time of the 1860 census the wife was listed as Margaret, is something mixed up here? John and Sarah were the parents of six known children, namely:
4. Robert E. S. Barkley (1856-p1880)
5. Nancy Catherine "Nannie Kate" Barkley Lackey (1857-1936)
6. Thomas Sloan Barkley (1859-1940)
7. Sarah Jane Barkley (1861-1864)
8. Henry Franklin Barkley (1864-1950) (died at Los Angeles County, California, listed as Barkeley (sic) on California death index)
9. Laura Barkley (1866-1875)
