John Calvin Barkley was the youngest of three known children of John Cathey Barkley (1820-1893) and his second known wife, Elizabeth Julia Morrison (1811-1854), who married 19 Dec 1844 at Iredell County, North Carolina. John Cathey Barkley was first married to Mary Walker (1810-1843), with no known children. After Elizabeth died, John Cathey Barkley remarried to Sarah Amanda Boyd (1828-1869) in c1855 in presumably North Carolina and had an additional six known children.
John married Emma Augusta Slack (1857-1921) on 04 Nov 1875 at Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois. John and Emma were the parents of three known children, namely:
1. Edward Daniel Barkley (1876-1918)
2. Maggie Elizabeth Barkley (1879-1885)
3. Bertha Hoyt Barkley Shepard (1888-1958)
In 1868 John moved from North Carolina to Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois where the three children were born. In 1880 the parents and first two children were living at Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois with John listed as a groceryman. In 1920 the parents and single daughter Bertha were still living at Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois with John listed as a laborer in a smelter.
