BARKLEY, James Morrison, clergyman; He was born Nov. 22, 1846, near Statesville, NC. He was the son of John Cathey and Eliza Julia (Morrison) Barkley. He earned an A.B. from Princeton in 1876. He graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1879. He earned a D.D. from Alma College in 1899 and a LL.D. in 1912. He married Mary E. Conwell, of Evanston, Ill on May 27, 1879. Mary died Apr. 26, 1913. The children of James and Mary are: Earl C. (D.D.S.), Margary A. (Mrs. F. E. McClure), Mary G. (Mrs. F. C. Sibley). James served as a private to lieutenant Co. F, 73d N. C. Infantry (Junior Reserves), C. S. A., 1864-65. Also Co A 7th NC Junior Reserves and 3rd NC Junior Reserves. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1879. He served as pastor at Wickliffe Church, Newark, N. J., 1879-82, in Hillsdale, Mich., 1882-85; state secretary Y. M. C. A., Michigan, 1885-87; pastor Third (now Forest) Avenue Church, Detroit, since 1887. Moderator Presbyterian General Assembly, Denver, 1909; president Board of Trustees, Alma College; honorary member Old Fourth Veteran Michigan Infantry; associate member Detroit Post No. 384, G. A. R. Republican. Author various published sermons and addresses. Recreation: outdoor sports. Residence: 309 Putnam Ave.
