Mary Elizabeth Barkley was born Jan. 20, 1847 in Iredell county, North Carolina, and passed at her home southwest of Spring Hill, Monday, July 3, 1933, aged 84 years, 5 months and 13 days.

She united with the Presbyterian church when 16 years of age and was married to D.A. Harkey on August 13, 1868. In October of the same year they came west, locating in Johnson county, Kansas where they lived until the fall of 1878. They then moved to the present homestead.

In the spring of 1880 they united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in which faith she has lived a consecrated Christian life.

She was the mother of five children, Sarah, Nannie and Mamie, who with their father have preceded her in death.

Surviving are Dr. W.C. Harkey of Lenexa and Mrs. Stella H. Rennick of the home; two granddaughters, Mary Harkey Hall of Berkley, Calif., and Eunice Harkey of Lenexa; three great grandsons, Billie, Hubert and Bennie Hall; and a sister, Mrs. N.C. Lackey of Spring Hill.

Early in childhood she accepted her Savior and only Friday affirmed her faith in Him and said "I have nothing to fear."

Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Scott of Hillsdale and burial was made in the Spring Hill cemetery.
