John C. Blackburn was born about 1820 in either Shelby or Tipton County in Southwestern Tennessee. At this time, his parents' names are not known. The May 4, 1841 Tipton County, Tennessee marriage record states John C. Blackburn and Ardenia Reese, although other records have been located with the spelling Hardenia Reece.
By 1850, John and Hardenia along with their three children, Lucinda Rebecca Jane, William H. and Catherine J. T. 'Hazentine' Blackburn were living in Dyer County, Tennessee. From Dyer County, they moved near the town of Quitman in what is now Cleburne County, Arkansas. Hardenia died there sometime prior to the 1860 Census, but her grave site has not been located.
John C. Blackburn then moved to Magazine Twp. in Yell County, Arkansas, where he purchased a farm and married Sarah Ann 'Sallie' [Crabtree] Inman. The farm has been located through a title search and is by the town of Ranger in Yell County. (Most of the property is now in the possession of the Arkansas Game and Fish Department.)
John died there prior to 1870, leaving Sarah and their three daughters, Alice J., Susin Tennessee and Lillie 'Emmaline' Blackburn. John's grave site, whether it be in the Dacus Cemetery or the Ben Cemetery (which is closer to their farm) cannot be verified and was probably marked only with native stone.
John's widow, Sarah Ann 'Sallie' [Crabtree] Inman Blackburn, later married Joseph C. Pickens and, after his death, she married Richard Massey/Massie. Sarah is laid to rest in the Havana Cemetery in Yell County under the name Sallie Massie.
