400. Jane Eastes

In a letter dated 28 March 1998, from Bruce Lee, 4886 Twain Ave, SanDiego, CA 92120-4223, is stated the following:

"The following is copied from a letter to Marie & Jim Lange by CathieConner Jack on January 1956. She was Grandmother Mary Avaline ConnerLee's only sister." (Bruce Lee)

" I will write you what little I know of the family history, All I knowhas been handed down by word of mouth - no historical books."

"Francis Harvey married Obadiah Eastes and I have the names of eight of them. (children) Jane Eastes was the oldest one. They were all born in South Carolina but I don't know which part of the State.
When some of the children were small the Harvey and Eastes Families moved to what is now Franklin Co., Indiana. This must have been about 1797 as I have heard my grandmother say she was about four years old. She told me that in one place they went through they thought the Indians were hostile. One child was beginning to talk and kept wanting to say, "Hop Up Joe" and as they wanted to be as quit as possible she had to put her handover his mouth to keep him still."

"Time went on., William Harvey became a man and Jane Eastes became a young lady. So, they married. She was his Niece. But who can censure or criticize when we think of the hardships and privations our ancestors went through to develop a Country where we might live. My Mother Evaline was the youngest child of this marriage. She was born near Blooming Grove Indiana January 3, 1836 and died at my home near Pond Creek,Oklahoma March 14, 1917 and buried beside my Father John Conner near Kiawa, Kansas. My Grandmother Jane Eastes was born in South Carolina June 6, 1793 and died near Cumberland, Indiana January 24, 1888. She is buried in the Eastes Cemetery near Mt Comfort, Indiana. My Grandfather William Harvey was born in South Carolina and died March 7 1860 near Blooming Grove, Indiana and buried north of Fairfield, Indiana"

The following is Jane's obituary as given by Elder R.W. Thompson:

" Died 24 Janaury 1888, Mrs Jane Harvey aged 94 years, 7 months and 18days.
Mrs Harvey was born in the State of South Carolina on 6 June 1793 and in early life she moved with her parents, Obediah and Fancis Eastes, to the then wilderness of Kentucky. In the year 1804, in the company of her parents, she moved to Franklin County, Indiana , settling on the east fork of the White Water River, a little above Brookville. She was married to William Harvey in the year 1815, with whom she lived until his death, which occurred in 1862. Eight children were the results of this happy union, four sons and four daughters, all of whom lived to become men and women and to have families of their own; six of them still survive her, two daughters having having preceded her to that bourne from whence no traveler returns. She united with the Old School, or Primitive Baptist Church, Fairfield, Franklin County, Indiana, July 1825 and was baptized by Elder William Tyner. She moved to Hancock County, Indiana in the year 1862 and became a member of the Mt Gilead Primitive Baptist Church of this County. For sixty three years she was a member of the Church of Christ, lived an exemplary life and was a devoted Christian mother in Isreal. After a short illness of but a few days, she quietly passed away. The writer was called to the house of mourning where he met many friends and relatives and tryed to comfort them, speaking to them from St John XI-26; May the Blessed Master give grace to the friends of the deceased, reconcile them to this and every dispensation of His providence."
