"Obadiah Estes was the eldest son of Elisha Estes who died in Roane County, Tennessee. Obadiah was born in Virginia and died 19 February 1847 in Mt Comfort, IN and is buried in the Eastes/Harvey Cemetery in Hancock County, Indiana. His headstone says, 88 years, 7 month and 15 days. This establishes his birth date as being 4 July 1758.
On 9 February 1792, Obadiah married Francis Harvey in Edgefield, SC. Francis was the daughter of James Harvey and Francis Holcomb. Francis was born 14 August 1774 in Edgefield, SC and died 3 September 1854 and is buried in the Eastes/Harvey cemetery at Mt Comfort, Hancock County, Indiana. At the time of their marriage Obadiah was 33 years, 7 months and 5 days old. Francis was 17 years, 5 months and 26 days old."
Obadiah and Francis had 11 children, one died before reaching maturity. The oldest child Jane was born 6 June 1793, the second child was Philamon born 27 March 1795 and the third was John born 1 February 1798, all in South Carolina. The fourth child Sarah, was born 9 March 1800 in Kentucky and the others were all born in Indiana.
Some time after John was born in February 1798 and before May 1799, Obadiah, Francis and the three small children left South Carolina on a long journey. They traveled northwest to the Wilderness Trail blazed by Daniel Boone and up though the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky. At that time wagons could not be used as the trail was merely a path originally used by the migrating buffalo and the Indians. Later, a group led by Daniel Boone cleared the trail making it into a crude road to allow wagon traffic. Our party traveled by horseback and walked, carrying all of their belongings on pack horses. One story tells that while passing through a hostile Indian area, "-- the two smaller children were put in sacks one on each end and placed across a horses back. Handkerchiefs were tied over their mouths for fear the Indians would hear their crying."

August 1, 1806, Obadiah Estes made a deposit with the Cincinnati Land Office and entered the South West Quarter of Section 33, in the area which later became Franklin Co., IN.
1807, a second land office opened in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
In the June 1st 1807, Obadiah is shown on a list living in Dearborn Co. in which that was later to be divided into Wayne, Franklin, Union, Fayette, Dearborn, Ohio, Rush and Switzerland Counties. (He probably was located in the projected Franklin Co. area)
1810, Franklin Co. was created From Clark Co., IN.
16 December 1811, the great New Madrid Earth Earthquake shakes the entire Ohio Valley .
10. March 1812, Obadiah made final payment on the land in Section 33, now in Franklin Co., IN although it is shown as being in Dearborn Co., IN at Cincinnati Land Office.
"Obadiah Eastes(Estess) served in the war of 1812 under Clark's Battalion, East Tennessee Militia as a private in and a private out. Roll Box 67, Microfilm number M602 of the W.S. War of 1812 Service Records." Thanks to Gloria for this information.

5 August 1818, Obadiah and Philoman Eastes record lots for a town name Ferona in Franklin Co.
On 6 June 1834 Obadiah purchased the Eastes farm in the West 1/2 of the North East Quarter of Section 19, Township 16 (now Buck Creek Township), Range 6 East - - 80 Acres for $425.00 (Deed B, page 33). The name on the deed was made out as Estes and Obadiah signed with his mark (X) that was witnessed by two people. On 20 June 1844 Obadiah and Francis sold 14 acres to William C. Ray for $100.00. (This property is located on Ray Road near Mt. Comfort.)
A part of this Section 19, Buck Creek Township, Hancock Co., IN was the original home of Obadiah and Francis Eastes. In 1887, the land was owned by their (grand)son, John Christopher Columbus Eastes. The Eastes-Harvey Cemetery is located in the corner of the property on Ray Road on the south side of Mt Comfort, Indiana."
