Rebecca was the daughter of Christopher Bair and Barbara Simon. She married John C. Carnes in Holmes County, Ohio Nov. 18, 1847. Their first three children were born in Ohio. John and his family are in the 1850 Census for Jackson, Coshocton, Ohio, living next to his parents; John and Catharine Croco Carnes.

The family moved to Indiana around 1854 and can be found in the 1860 census residing in Concord Township, DeKalb County, Indiana where he was a farmer. John answered the call to arms and joined Union forces for the Civil War. He was killed at Padcah, Kentucky, while mounting a canon. Rebecca and family are still on the family homestead in the 1870, 1880 census, living next to her brother Simon Bair. Rebecca is the head and housekeeper with the boys farming the homestead.
