Johnathan was the 10th of 10 children of Christopher Bair and Barbara Simon born in Columbiana County, Ohio. His name is spelled Johnathan in his father's Bible and Jonathan on his memorial.

Johnathan married Jane Hanna (1833-1869) on Feb. 8, 1859, in Holmes Co., Ohio. They moved to Cedar Creek Township, Allen County, Indiana and can be found in the 1860 Census, family #971. They settled on land that had part of his father, Christopher's, land patten #5263. Their four children; MANSFIELD b. 1860, Augustus (a) b. 1862, Maryland b. 1864 and James H. b. 1867, were all born in Indiana. The family moved to P. O. Ocheltree, Spring Hill Twp., Johnson Co. Kansas between 1867 and 1869. In 1869, Jane (Jennie), passed away in Kansas. John and his four children can be found in the 1870 census as family #175. Johnathan married second, Priscilla "Lillie" Johnson. The family has a homestead of 240 acres shown on the 1886 plat map of Johnson Co., Spring Hill Twp. Section 3. This combined family is # 68 of the 1880 Census, for that area. In the 1900 Census the Bairs are in Douglas County, Palmyra Twp. Kansas, Johnathan is listed as a landlord. In 1910 the Census finds Johnathan back in Johnson Co. Springhill Twp.

The death of Jonathan Bair occurred Thursday night at 10 o'clock at the family home, nine miles south- west of Olathe, or three miles northwest of Ocheltree. The funeral service was held from the home Sunday afternoon,- conducted by Rev. Shepherd, of Spring Hill. Burial was made in Olathe. In spite of Ills, age which would have been 86 next June,… He had lived on the very same farm 50, years, coming from Ohio. - He Is survived by his widow, [children:]Mrs. [Augusta] Curtis Williams, Waverly, Kan., Mrs. [Ruth] Roy Burbridge, Kansas City, Miss Mayme [Maryland] Bair, at home, and R. C. [Robert Carr] Bair a son, at Ocheltree. Mr. Bair was one of Johnson county's oldest and best loved citizens...
