Henry Jefferson Carnes was the son of John C. Carnes and Rebecca Bair Carnes. His birth is recorded in the John C. Carnes Bible and transcribed in the Chedwato Supplement, Ancestral Notes No. 15, May 1964 page 178. The family can be found in the 1870 census of Butler, Concord Twp, DeKalb Co., Indiana. 1880 they are listed as Karnes, family 44, living next to his Uncle Samuel Bair in Concord, DeKalb, Indiana. At this time Henry is a farmer.

Henry married Ella V. [Virginia], 10 Dec 1886, in Seneca County, Ohio, with the couple living in Concord, Dekalb, Indiana for the 1900 census, where his occupation is listed as meat market. 1910 they are still in Concord and Henry is a Salesman for Cream Separators. By 1920 they have moved to Bloomington Ward 3, Perry Twp., Monroe, Indiana he is now listed as a Traveling Man, for the Cream Separator Co. In 1930 They have moved to Michigan where he is a dairy farmer in Howard Twp., Cass Co. 1940 they are still in Howard, where he died, a retired farmer, March 1, 1956.

His death record states his address was 2391 Yankee St., Niles, Howard Twp., Cass, Michigan and that he passed away in rural Howard, Cass, MI. His parents were John Carnes and Rebecca Bair. He is widowed and his wife was Ella V. He was 94 and a retired farmer. His interment was at White City Cemetery in Spencerville, Indiana on March 3, 1956.
