John Napoleon Carnes was a son of John C. Carnes and Rebecca Bair. He was born in DeKalb County, Indiana and is with his family in Concord, DeKalb, Indiana for the 1860, 1870, 1880 census. His father died in the Civil War in 1861 and John Napoleon was raised by his mother. The family lived next to Rebecca's brother Simon Bair in 1860, and were farmers with the Post Office address of Auburn. 1870 they are living on the same property, with cousin Samuel Bair living next to them with the P.O. of Butler, as Farmers. In 1880 the families are on the same homesteads.
