Aaron Schellinger was the second son born to parents Jacob and Elizabeth Fauver Schellinger, of Bridgeton, Cumberland Co, New Jersey. Aaron spent his youth with his family in Bridgeton until 9 December 1863, giving his age as 19, he volunteered "...to serve as a SOLDIER in the Army of the United States of America, for the period of THREE YEARS, unless sooner discharged by proper authority... ." Aaron gave his occupation as farmer and he was described in the enlistment papers as follows: "this soldier has grey eyes, dark hair, light complexion, is 5 feet 4 inches high." Though Aaron's enlistment papers state that he was 19 years of age, other records indicate that he was really 17 when he enlisted. At the ripe old age of 19 he was a battle-hardened veteran when honorably discharged at Washington, D.C. on 1 August 1865. Aaron served as a Private with Co H, 3rd New Jersey Cavalry.
Less than four years later, on 26 May 1869, he married Anna Stevens in Bridgeton, NJ. Aaron and Anna had two sons: Robert Reed and William H, however, only Robert Reed survived to adulthood. Anna died on 27 Nov 1875 as a result of complication following the birth of son William.
Aaron's second marriage was to Nancy Hayes Moss Barnett, a widow, on 28 April 1877 in Bridgeton, NJ. Together, Aaron and Nancy had five children: Henrietta Marion, Ida May, Mary, Florence and Jesse Burton; Mary and Florence did not survive to adulthood. Aaron and Nancy eventually removed to Whiting, IN, and remained there until relocating to Potomac, Illinois and then ultimately, to Hawkins, Wisconsin. With his loving wife, Nancy, at his bedside, Aaron passed from this life at the home of his stepson, W.B. Barnett, on Tuesday, 26 September 1922, at the age of 76 years; death was due to nephritis. Aaron's descendants survive today.
Aaron's older brother, Charles K Skellenger, was also a Civil War veteran; his Find a Grave memorial is # 18368855. Brothers, Charles K and Aaron, were the grandsons of Revolutionary War Patriot, Frederick Fauver (1762-1852), who fought for American freedom as part of the New Jersey State Militia; Frederick's Find a Grave memorial is # 33496061.
Charles K and Aaron were eighth generation descendants of Jacobus Schellinger (1625-1693) of Amsterdam, Netherlands; Jacobus was the Dutch immigrant who first brought his family's name to the New World circa 1650.
