Jacob Aaron was the first son born to parents Furman and Mary McCullogh Schellinger of Cape May, New Jersey. Jacob was born about the time Furman and Mary removed to Hopewell Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ, so he may have been born in either place as the documentation is unclear. Jacob married Elizabeth Fauver, daughter of James and Mary Facemire Fauver, about 1837 in Cumberland, NJ. Together they had ten children, eight are listed below; children Amanda and James did not survive to adulthood. As Jacob and Elizabeth's marriage failed, he eventually became a member of son Aaron's family. When Aaron removed to Whiting, IN, Jacob went with him, and spent his remaining days there. Jacob's final resting place has not been confirmed, but the search is continuing. We know he was first buried in the Whiting Cemetery, but when this cemetery was disestablished circa 1913, his remains were moved; exactly where remains under investigation. However, recently received (Sep 2014) info from a local researcher indicated that any disinterred remains that were unclaimed by family members, were buried in a common grave on land that is now part of the Kneseth Israel Jewish Cemetery located on 167th Street, Hammond, IN. Although, Jacob did have family members residing in Hammond in 1913, it's unclear if they claimed his remains, or not.
Jacob Aaron was a seventh generation decendant of Jacobus Schellinger (1625-1693) of Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Nederland; Jacobus was the Dutch immigrant who first brought his family's name to the New World circa 1650.
