Charles K was wounded in battle several times and spent several months as a prisoner of war. He returned home to wife and children in Newark, NJ, and lived there until 1881 when, following the death of his wife, Ann Elizabeth, he married Mary Elizabeth and went "out west". He made his home in Colehour, Cook, IL, until at least 1883; the year of his second wife's death. He is noted again in June 1890 in Laramie, Albany, WY; subsequently, he removed to Roseburg, Douglas, OR, where he lived for approximately fifteen years. Eventually, he removed to northern CA in 1905 and, because of failing health, was admitted to the Veteran's Home of California, at Yountville, Napa, CA, on 22 Sep 1905. He resided there and in the town of Yountville with his third wife Ida Viola and their daughter, Ida G, until his death at the Veteran's Home Hospital. Charles K was married three times: Ann Elizabeth HAGERMAN (1832-1881) of NJ; Mary Elizabeth "Lizzy" REED (1859-1883) of Harrisburg, PA and lastly, Ida Viola WEST (1874-1918) of Plymouth Co, IA. Ida V and Charles K lie beside each other in the George C Yount Pioneer Cemetery of Yountville, CA.
Charles K was survived by son, John Hagerman SKELENGER (1868-1922), of Newark, Essex, NJ, and daughters Lila O Skellenger WILKENING (1873-1953) of Faribault, Rice, Minnesota, and Ida G Skellenger GATLIN (1911-1999), of Turner, Marion, OR.
Charles K's younger brother, Aaron Schellinger, was also a Civil War veteran. Brothers, Aaron Schellinger and Charles K Skellenger, were the great grandsons of Revolutionary War Patriot, Frederick Fauver (1762-1852), who fought for American freedom as part of the New Jersey State Militia; Frederick's Find a Grave memorial is 33496061
Charles K and Aaron were eighth generation descendants of Jacobus Schellinger (c1625-1693) of Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands; Jacobus was the Dutch immigrant who first brought his family's name to the New World circa 1650.

Gravesite Details
The bio-data (1879-1918) on the old, white marble headstone are incorrect. Charles K's third wife, Ida Viola West (1874-1918) is buried alongside Charles K. Somehow, her (incorrect) headstone bio-dates of 1879-1918, were erroneously applied to him.
