Sarah Elizabeth was born in Okibbeha, Okibbeha County, Mississippi & was orphaned at a young age. She was adopted by William & Rebecca Baldwin in Mississippi. Per her affidavit to the War Dept she did not know her exact birth date but did know her parents (unknown if she meant birth or adoptive) were from Virginia. Her adoptive parents moved her to Yatesville, Morgan County, Illinois about 1860 along with their daughter Frances "Fannie" Baldwin-Rose who she would grow to love & know as her sister.

Sarah worked as a servant for Robert Reeves. His farm was 15 miles just East of Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois on the big prairie as described in documents from Sarah in later years when she filed for Widow's Pension with the War Department & is where she met her future husband. In the Summer of 1868 Andrew found work on Robert Reeves farm. Story is told that when Andrew left for the winter he asked Sarah to wait for him. He promised to return soon & that he would give her a good home, love & lots of children.

Andrew & Sarah married late March or early April of 1869; moving immediately to Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana & in April of 1869 appearing at the doorstep of Andrew's cousin Newton Dunbar's home announcing they were newlyweds per a 1922 affidavit.

Andrew & Sarah lived in a two story red brick home along the Wabash River at 655 North Water Street in Terre Haute with their children always close by.

They had 8 children with 1 dying at infancy.

Sarah fell & broke her hip in the fall of 1923 resulting in her becoming ill for 7 days with bronchial pneumonia which contributed to her death. Dr William Kemkler saw her from 1 Oct 1923 until her death. She had suffered from arterial sclerosis for the past 4 years prior to her death as well. She died at 11:50pm at home. AO Gillis conducted her funeral & burial.

Due to her death certificate being filled out incorrectly by her caregiver George Brown the obituary was published with several mistakes. Son Andrew Jackson Jr was not listed & was alive in 1923; also Sarah, Oscar, George & Albert last names should be Barrett & Nellie last name should be Merritt. Death & funeral took place at her daughter Nellie Barrett-Merritt's residence.
