George Washington Barrett was born Tuesday, 29 Jun 1875 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana. He was the 3rd child born to Andrew Jackson & Sarah Elizabeth (Baldwin) Barrett. George grew up between the towns of West Terre Haute & Terre Haute of Indiana; & Martinsville, Clark County, Illinois.

At the age of 25, George owned property in Marshall, Clark County, Illinois; on 5 Jul 1900 the Clark County Herald had him listed for property taxes. He also owned property at 1718 N 5th Street in Terre Haute, two properties in Twp 12 of West Terre Haute & property in the St Mary's area in Vigo County, Indiana.

At the age of 42, on Thursday, 4 Apr 1918 in Terre Haute, Indiana George married Mary Pomerill Johnson. Listed as his 2nd marriage per their marriage application. They resided at 219 Eagle Street., Terre Haute, Indiana. They divorced the same year; before 24 Dec 1918.

George took up residence at the Great Northern Hotel for a few years before moving to 318 Eagle Street., Terre Haute where he rented until 1929 when he moved to 211 Chestnut Street.

George was a bartender until the age of 43 working at various establishments; working the longest for GE Stutz. He rented homes & rooms on National Highway & 131 N 2nd Street until he married his 2nd wife. No record has been found of his 1st marriage in Indiana.

In 1918 at the age of 43 George lived at 414 1/2 Ohio Street per his 1918 draft card. He was of white race, native born, born 29 June 1875; stout build, medium height, light brown hair & blue eyes. He listed his father Andrew Jackson Barrett as his closest relative. He was employed at Grasselli Chemical Company as a gas maker located at N 13th Street North of City, Terre Haute.

From the years of 1929 to 1941 George was an inmate in the Vigo County Jail aka Poor House; located at 2500 N Watson, Harrison Twp., Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. After his released he returned to his former residence at 211 Chestnut Street in Terre Haute for a short period of time. In 1943 he rented at 520 N 4th Street & lived here until his death.

Terre Haute Tribune – George Washington Barrett, 73 years old, 412 N 4th Street, died at 5:45 pm Friday. He is survived by a sister, Mrs Nellie Merritt, and two brothers, Oscar and Albert Barrett, all of Terre Haute. The body was taken to the Gillis Memory Chapel where funeral services will be held at 1:30 o’clock Monday afternoon. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

George Washington Barrett passed away at St Anthony Hospital in Terre Haute at 5:45pm on Sunday, 12 Mar 1948 at the age of 72 yrs, 8 months & 15 days. He had undergone surgery the prior week at St Anthony Hospital. He died from Carcinoma of Pancreas with Metastases of Liver (In stage 4 of Pancreatic Cancer it spreads to other organs, in his case his liver), Retention of Urine (obstruction in urinary track from gall stones or prostate cancer), Toxemia & Reclamation. His informant was his sister Nellie Merritt. An autopsy was performed. His parents were listed on his death certificate. His funeral was conducted by A. O. Gillis & Sons Funeral Home in Terre Haute with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in Terre Haute on Wednesday, 15 Mar 1948.
