Terre Haute Tribine Obituary: Albert Barrett, 65 years old, R R 1 West Terre Haute died at the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis at 12:15 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. He was a veteran of World War 1. The body was brought to Bedino Chapel of the Valley where funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Friday morning with the Rev Archie Brown officiating. Burial will be in Mt Pleasant Cemetery.

Albert “Abb” B Barrett was born Thursday, 8 Sept 1887 in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. He was the 8th child born to Andrew Jackson & Sarah Elizabeth (Baldwin) Barrett. At age 3, Albert along with his parents & siblings were residing at 1640 N 2nd Street, Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. In 1897 they moved to 304 N 14th Street, Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. By the age of 14, Albert & his parents were living at 1718 N 5th Street, & Albert was employed as a laborer at the Wheel Company.
On Sunday, 13 Dec 1908 Albert enlisted in the United States Army, training by Jefferson City, Missouri. Albert’s enlistment read as follows: 22 yrs. 3 months old; 5’7” tall, laborer, blue eyes, light hair & fair complexion. He served 3 years in Co E 20th Infantry; discharging on Friday, 15 Dec 1911 at Ft Douglas in Utah. His honorable discharge was completed on Tuesday, 19 Dec 1911.

On Saturday, 3 April 1915 in Vigo County, Indiana, Albert at the age of 27 married Nellie F. Marshall. By January of 1916 they were separated & living at different residences per city directories. Albert applied for a Military Pension on 5 Jan 1916; no wife is listed. Albert worked as a laborer, & he resided in Taylorville & Terre Haute until his departure in 1917.

On Monday, 31 May 1917 at the age 29 years 8 months, Albert reenlisted into the United States Army serving his country during World War 1. For 2 years he served in Co C 60th Infantry 5th Division that was organized 10 Jun 1917 in Ft Huachuca in Arizona. His division was part of the “Doughboys” Division; first deployed to the Western European Battle Front & training with the French Army in Belgium & Luxembourg. He saw action & fought during the Western Front Campaign, St Mihiel, & Alsace & Lorraine Battles in France. [His Division would go on to one last campaign lasting 45 days at Meuse-Argonne; this offensive is also known as the Maas-Argonne Offensive & the Battle of the Argonne Forest.] Albert was wounded in France during the Battle of Alsace & Lorrain & as a result would walk with the assistance of a cane the remainder of this life. He received an honorable discharge on Wednesday, 9 April 1919, & received both the Purple Heart & Good Conduct Awards. On Monday, 21 July 1919 he arrived home at Hoboken, New Jersey port by the New York Port of Embarkation (NYPOE).

In March of 1920, Albert married Minerva “Goldie” Myrtle Guess & they resided at 124 Sycamore in Terre Haute. At this time, he worked as a laborer. They moved to Taylorville by 1922 & Albert worked a variety of jobs the remainder of his life, including a peddler, a driver, & a laborer. He & Goldie lived in Terre Haute & West Terre Haute the remainder of his life. Albert loved his dog & is remembered playing outside with it on many occasions, where he taught it how to climb trees.

Albert B Barrett of RR 1 Box 150-A, West Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana was admitted to Indianapolis V.A. Hospital located at 1481 W 10th Street in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana on Wednesday, 1 April 1953 suffering an unknown amount of time from carcinoma of the rectum. He died at 12:15 pm on Tuesday, 21 April 1953 in Indianapolis at the age of 65 yrs 7 months & 13 days old. His wife Goldie was his informant & his parents’ were listed on his death certificate with his mother’s maiden name as “unknown”. An autopsy was performed. On 24 April 1953 Goldie applied for a flat granite headstone marker to be placed at his burial location with his military history engraved from the US Government. It was ordered & prepared by H.E. Fletcher Company in West Chelmsford, Massachusetts on 25 May 1953. Headstone was delivered & set on 12 Aug 1953 in Mt Pleasant Cemetery. Albert was interred on Friday, 24 April 1953.
