Bertha Elizabeth Palmer was born 09 Jan 1878 in Meridian Twp., Okemos, Ingham, MI, the 2nd of 8 children (and first daughter) born to Isaiah Palmer (1846-1930) and Mary Margaret Elizabeth Strayer (1856-1939).
Bertha was married three times: first to John C. Arend (1865-1910), who was 8 years her senior. John & Bertha married 16 Sep 1901 in Delhi Centre (Twp.), Holt, Ingham, MI USA. They had one child, Gertrude Arend (1904-1978), who married Glenn John Henry Albert (1905-1997). The family appears together on the 1910 US Census record.
After John's death in 1910, Bertha married second to Joseph D. Rankey, 2 years her junior, on 24 Aug 1915 in Lansing, Ingham, MI. They had one child, Margaret J. Rankey, who married twice (unknown first husband, but suspect it was a brother or cousin to 2nd husband); 2nd to Cletus Carl Razet on 15 Dec 1944 in Allen, IN, USA. The family appears together in the 1920 US Census Record.
Sometime between 1920-1924, Bertha and Joseph divorced. During that same time frame, Bertha's sister, Maud A (Palmer) Warner died on 11 Mar 1924, leaving a widower Warren Carl Warner with two daughters still at home: Fern and Carol. The youngest, Carol, who was the same age as Bertha's daughter Margaret; both girls about 6 in 1924. So, on 18 Jun 1925, Bertha married for the third and last time, to her brother-in-law Warren Carl Warner, and moved to Aurelius Twp., Mason, MI from her home in Lansing, MI. Together Carl & Bertha finished raising their three children. They also apparently cared for her aging parents Isaiah Palmer & Libby (Strayer) Palmer, because obituaries state that both died in Carl & Bertha's home on Barnes Road in Aurelius Twp. (1930, 1939), where Bertha also died in 1953. Carl & Bertha appear together in the 1930 and 1940 US Census records in Aurelius.
I suspect since both Warren Carl and Bertha's spouses preceded them in death and many years before them, cemetery lots were likely chosen for each at that time. Thus, Carl & Bertha are buried with their first spouses: Bertha with John C. Arend in Holt; Carl with Maud A. Palmer Warner in Aurelius.
