Anna Nielsen was born April 2, 1888, in Gronderup, Hjorring,Denmark. She was Christened at the Vrejlev Kirke (a Lutheran Church). Her parents were Niels Nielsen and Oline Elsine Olesen. Anna was the third child born in their family of eight children. The first four children traveled to America in the early 1900's. The younger four remained in Denmark and have many extended family members.

Anna's older sister, Elsa Marie, traveled to America alone in April of 1902. Anna and her older brother, Ole, traveled to America in August of 1902 and her next younger brother, Niels Christian Nielsen immigrated in 1909. Ole, Elsa and Anna first worked for their Uncle Martinus Olesen Klitten in Reardon, Washington.

Anna was age 14 years-4 months when she left home and traveled to America. Her mother's brother, Uncle Martinus Olesen Klitten and his wife, Carolyn, had traveled to Denmark to visit family and brought back to Reardon, Washington four nieces and nephews of Caroline's and Ole and Anna (nephew and niece of Martin). They all went to Reardon, Washington to work for Martin and Carolyn. It is reported that Anna worked aboard ship to help pay for her passage to Ellis Island. She then worked for Uncle Martin for no pay until she paid him back for her passage and board and keep. Around 1910-1914, Anna and her brother, Niels "Chris" staked a homestead claim near Fort Benton, Montana. In 1909, her younger brother, Neils Christian Nielsen, had come over from Denmark.

Anna married Herbert Howell in 1916. Their wedding photo is from Great Falls, Montana. During the next two years Herbert contracted the "Spanish Flu of 1918". Anna and Herbert moved to Coronado, (San Diego) California, hoping to improve his health and to be near good medical facilities; and her sister, Else Marie Day. Niels "Uncle Chris" stayed on the farm near Fort Benton and worked it the rest of his life. The Spanish Flu of 1918 caught up with Herbert and he died January 13, 1918, and is buried in San Diego.

Some time later, Anna married Jasper Jotham Walden - a career Naval officer. A baby daughter was born and died in 1928. Another daughter, Mary Anna Walden was born in 1932 (she lived to be 80 years old). Around 1945 they moved to Louisville, Kentucky (near Jasper's family). Mary Anna attended college in Kentucky.

Anna developed Alzheimer disease. It had been decided that she should be buried with her first husband, Herbert, in San Diego (Coronado), CA. "They flew my grandmother's body to be buried in Coronado by her first husband after she died in Kentucky." (Gail Cicon). Jasper lived on his own in Kentucky until he died in August of 1968; he is buried in Kentucky.
