He had three older siblings: one brother, Ole Christian Nielsen and two sisters, Else Marie Nielsen and Anna Nielsen. Four more siblings followed him: Kristian Berg Nielsen, Peter Thorvald Nielsen, Karl Emil Nielsen, and Margrethe Nielsen.
The family lived in Gronderup, Vrejlev, Hjorring, Denmark.
Chris immigrated to America in 1909. He joined with his sister, Anna, in homesteading land near Fort Benton, Montana.
