Ethel A. Kastendieck dies at home
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, July 23, for Valley native Ethel Adelaide Kastendieck, late of 400 S. 2nd in Westcliffe. She died July 19, 1986 at her home following a lingering illness. She was 90. Mrs. Kastendieck was born March 23, 1896 at the Hamlin homestead southwest of Westcliffe to Albert G. and Mary Jame (Hamilton) Hamlin. She married Henry W. Kastendieck on March 20, 1918. They were the first couple to be married in the Hope Lutheran Church after it was built in Westcliffe. The couple farmed in the Wet Mountain Valley, and had operated the Kastendieck Garage on west Main Street in Westcliffe. They later moved to Canon City where Mr. Kastendieck worked for the city. They then returned to the Valley where they had a ranching operation. They moved to Westcliffe in 1973. Mrs. Kastendieck, a homemaker, was a member of the Sangre de Cristo Church in Westcliffe. She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 25, 1978. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Julia Orr and Mrs. Geneva Hunt, and by a grandson, "Shorty" Kastendieck, in 1970. Mrs. Kastendieck is survived by two sons, Chester K. Kastendieck and Charles M. Kastendieck, both of rural Westcliffe. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Dwight Kastendieck of Grants, NM.; Richard Kastendieck of Fort Collins; Michael Kastendieck of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Vickey Patterson of Pueblo; Nicola Sandefur of Penrose; and Sharon Berry of Hillside. Other survivors include 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Services were held at 10:30 am yesterday at the Sangre de Cristo Church, with Dr. Dwight Zeller officiating, assisted by Michael Waters. Pallbearers were Mrs. Kastendieck's grandsons and great-grandsons. Burial was at the Ula Cemetery.
