He was deputy sheriff for a number of years and deputy County Clerk under his brother Alexander and, in 1831, County Clerk. He was repeatedly elected County Clerk and Circuit Court Clerk and served into old age. He was also involved in real estate and owned a plantation.
His brother, Alexander, was first Bursar of the University of Virginia, close friend of Thomas Jefferson, and executor of Thomas Jefferson's estate.
