As a close adviser to Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Garrett was given the responsibility of establishing the University of Virginia. He handled most every aspect of this duty from building the classrooms, library, etc. to hiring the faculty. He was the executor of Thomas Jefferson's will and with the president when he died. Alexander Garrett's father was Henry Garrett Sr who was born about 1745 in Virginia. His parents were William Garrett, Sr. and Elizabeth Ashton. Henry spent most of his life in Louisa County, Virginia, before moving to Kentucky in 1810. He died in Kentucky in 1814, as evidenced by two Fayette County Court order book entries and his estate inventory in the Fayette County, KY probate records. [Elizabeth Smith (49314030)]
