Russell E. (Bo) Yates, 75, a former City Secretary and a member of Wellington Volunteer Fire Department for more than 40 years, died at his home at 8:35 p.m. Friday, May 11, after being in ill health for several years. Mr. Yates was also a city employee for more than 40 years, before he retired. He was a young man when he began to work for the city and worked up through the ranks to hold the post of City Secretary for a number of years. Wellington Volunteer Fire Department, with which he was so closely identified, had only one fire truck, hand-built by the late Bura Handley, when he became a fireman. With this small, vehicle, the city fought all fires, large and small. Mr. Yates served in the Navy during World War II and was one of the founders and a charter member of Glynn Moore Post No. 6439, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of 1st Baptist Church and of the Wellington Masonic Lodge. He headed the group in the VFW that for several years brought the top dance bands of the nation to Wellington, to play for crowds that packed Bura Handley Community Center-Guy Lombardo, Harry James, Lawrence Welk and others whose usual beat was New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. No other person was as successful in sponsoring entertainment in Wellington.
He was born January 23, 1909 at Detroit, Texas, the son of the late John E. Yates and Margaret Harris Yates. He came with his family to Collingsworth County when he was 9 years old, living in the Lutie Community before moving in to Wellington. He attended Lutie and Wellington Schools. He was married to Ann Wilson December 17, 1929 at Mangum, Okla. Survivors include his wife, Ann, one sister, Mrs. Marguerite Sass of Clovis, N.M.
