Friederica was the, likely illegitimate, daughter of Maria Sophia Friederica Friedrichsen of Dollrotzholz and Friederich Petersen, an innkeeper at nearby Scheggerott. She was born in Dollrottholz and baptized 7 Nov 1862 in the Süderbrarup-Loit parish of the Kirchenkreis Schleswig-Flensburg. Her mother subsequently married Conrad Peter Heinrich Nielsen, a widower, on 28 Apr 1864 and they subsequently had 7 children. Five of Friederica's half-siblings also emigrated from Germany to settle in Nebraska; Adolph Nielsen, Nicolaus Nielsen, John Nielsen, Christina Nielsen, and Andrew Nielsen (Andrew subsequently moved to Minnesota).

Friederica and her half-brother Adolph Nielsen emigrated together in 1881, leaving the port of Hamburg, Germany, and arriving in New York on the ship "Herder" on 9 June 1881. Their last residence was listed in the Hamburg passenger records as being Kattbek, Germany.

Friederica's half-sister Christina Nielsen immigrated to the U.S. in 1882 with her brothers Nicolaus and John; and Christina was subsequently listed in Friederica and John Harder's household in the 1885 Nebraska State Census.
