Nicolaus was a son of Conrad Peter Heinrich and Maria Sophia (Friedrichsen) Nielsen. His given name was Asmus Nicolaus Nielsen, but in the typical German tradition he went by his second given name.

The burial location for his parents is not known, but his grandparents, Hans Adolph and Anna Margaretha (Henningsen) Nielsen are buried in Saint Katherine's Lutheran Cemetery in Gelting, Germany.

He was born in Hollmühle, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. In 1882, at the age of 16, Nicolaus departed Hamburg Germany on the ship "India" with his younger brother John (age 12) and sister Christina (age 10) and arrived in New York. The place of origin listed for Nicolaus and Christina on the departure passenger list from Hamburg was Hattstedt, Holstein; while John's place of origin was listed as Kattbeck, Schleswig.

Nicolaus married Sophia Armbrust in 1894. They had one child, Walter, b. 1895, who was listed in the 1900 Census, but no other information exists for him.

Nicolaus was killed in a run away horse accident near 54th & L Street, Omaha, NE. He and his family were returning from a Sunday afternoon trip to Millard, NE. After Nick's death in 1901, Sophia remarried to Albert Saggau. She and Albert (and Albert's younger brother) are buried in the same cemetery lot as Nicolaus.
