Born 12 Dec 1888 in St. Joseph Island, Ontario, Canada. Baptised Marie Thomas at Garden River First Nation. Born to Henry Richard Thomas (born 1858 in Staunten, VA and was a slave until the end of the war) and Marguerite LaPointe an Indian of Drummond Island.
In 1905 traveled with father and siblings Oliver, Lucy and John to Minnesota for logging work. Settled in Pine County - first at Lake Lena Indian Settlement, and later near Bruno.
12 Jul 1909 married Jesse L Gay (born 1878) in Morrison County. In 1910 they lived near Bemidji. They had Alfred, Wilbur, Charles (who died in 1914 while visiting Mr. Gay's sister in Princeton) and Ethel. They moved back to Drummond Island and while looking for work in Bruce Mines, Ontario Jesse was killed by a train June 15, 1916 leaving Mary a young widow with three small children. She moved to Princeton, Minn to get help from Jesse's sister Minnie (at that time Minnie Veal, wife of Oliver) and was set up as the maid for Riley Veal, Oliver's brother. Riley's own wife had left town in 1916 and he was left with a small son, Garret.
Riley and Mary married 30 Jul 1923 in Princeton. They had 6 children: Ellsworth "Buck", Mina, Richard, Maggie, Annie, and Dorothy.
