Ethel was born to Jesse Gay (99775907) and Mary Elizabeth (Thomas) Gay (98501619) on Drummond Island in 1915. After her father died, her mother brought Ethel and siblings Wilbur and Alfred back to Princeton, Minnesota where they had lived prior to 1915 and where she thought she could get work. The state of Minnesota took the children from the poor widow due to poverty in 1920 and Ethel was subsequently adopted, but she kept in touch with her birth mother through letters throughout her life.

Ethel was adopted by Charles Kuethe (187935252) and Ida (Hillebrand) Kuethe and raised in Albert Lea, Minnesota. On January 20, 1926, Ethel's adoptive father Charles Kuethe was gored by a bull on the family farm, dying two days later.

In 1931, Ethel married Benjamin Irving Jensen (187931595) in Albert Lea. They had two children, Louise Carrie and Leroy Edwin. Ethel and Benjamin divorced in May 1935.

On September 21, 1935 Ethel married Thaddeus Larkin (132148447) in Albert Lea. Thaddeus adopted her children and they took his name. Thaddeus and Ethel moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They divorced on September 18, 1953.

Ethel married Edward Christopher Mager (79419438) about 1955. They remained married until her death in 1963.
