Lizzie was born on July 3, 1885 to George and Florence Annie (Bell) Buswell. The family doctor submitted a bill of $4.00 to attend her birth! She was called "Babe" or "Baby" for the first few months of her life and was the only one of George and Florence's children who was not named for a relative. The family lived in Newton County, Indiana and briefly returned to Virginia due to her father's poor health. After his death in Virginia, Lizzie remained on the family farm in Indiana; but eventually moved to Brook, Indiana with her younger brother George, and their mother. During the week, several of her teen-age nieces, nephews, and friends lived with them so they could attend high school as, at that time, country schools only had classes through the 8th grade. Lizzie wrote poetry and one poem, "My Church" was about the Mt. Zion Church. Lizzie's formal obituary lists her birth and death dates and where she lived but little else. If a life is measured by an obituary, it would seem our beloved "Aunt Lizzie" had a very poor and lonely life. That is not true in her case as Lizzie, although she never married, had a large family of loving brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews and a host of friends. She liked to travel and kept journals of her trips, including one in 1916 from North Dakota to Indiana in a Model T. Lizzie kept touch with her extended family and, upon her death, every one of her 54 great nieces and nephews (the great-grandchildren of George and Florence) received an inheritance (much to their surprise!)
