Carrie Ella Buswell was the third daughter to be born to George Daniel and Florence Annie (Bell) Buswell. Carrie was almost named Sarah Catherine in honor of her Grandma Bell but the young couple felt that name was too old-fashioned so selected the modern name of Carrie. Her middle name, Ella, was for her mother's sister. Carrie preferred outdoor work to house work while growing up and that preference continued into adulthood.

The day after her 21st birthday, October 30, 1901, Carrie married a neighbor boy, Frank Brewer. They began married life on the farm where he grew up. In 1912, Carrie and Frank built a new house there, the same year her brother Abram built his house. The "family" church, Mt. Zion, was also built the same year. Carrie always lived within three or four miles from where she was born.

Carrie and Frank raised four children together. Two of their children, Harley and Gladys, returned to the family home at cared for Carrie and Frank until their deaths. Carrie's death, on May 9, was 70 years after her father's; he also died on May 9.
