Abram Thomas Buswell was born on October 4, 1875 to George Daniel and Florence Annie (Bell) Buswell of the Mt. Zion neighborhood of rural Newton County, Indiana. Abram began field work at an early age and, by the age of 9 1/2, he frequently worked beside his father in the fields on the family farm. Abram was twelve when the family moved to Virginia and he had much responsibility for his younger siblings as his father was very ill. After his father's death, the family returned to Indiana and Abram continued attending school in the Spitler School. Abram also attended local schools in Virginia while living there. When he was 18, he attended Normal School in Danville, Indiana for a few sessions. He married Grace E. Herriman on Thanksgiving Day in 1898. Although always seeming to be a loving couple, Grace and Abram would not discuss politics as Abram was a Democrat and Grace a Republican!

At an early age Abram became a member of the Mt. Zion Church and was active until age prevented participation. As he aged, he continued his long-time practice of reading a chapter of the Bible each evening. He was a trustee of the church for many years and left a legacy which was used to purchase a new organ in 1966. Abram was also in charge of the Buswell Cemetery for many years. Until 1905, it was a family cemetery so Abram's family had to grant permission for burials and he helped dig many of the graves.

Abram was born, grew up, and raised his family on the same farm on which he died, land that has been in the Buswell family since 1839. This land used to have very dense trees and Abram recalled that, as a boy, he and a friend could go from the Buswell homestead to the Mt. Zion Church, a distance around half a mile, without touching the ground as they climbed over trees, stumps, and fallen logs.

Abram was survived by a son, Vernon, who lived close to his home and two daughters, Loreita Spangler of Anderson and Jean Sutton of Mulberry; as well as seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, a son Cloyd, and a grand-daughter, Janice Spangler. SOURCE: a grand-daughter, Nicki (Sutton) Stillings

NOTES: More great-grandchildren were born after his death, eventually making a total of 22 great-grandchildren for Grace and Abram.
