Mattie and Oscar began their married life on a farm which was on the Indiana-Illinois state line and always lived in the Iroquois area, sometimes in Indiana and sometimes in Illinois. Eventually they retired in Iroquois. Mattie was a busy farm wife and mother but found time to make several quilts and teach some of her granddaughters how to embroider.
Of all the Buswell children, Mattie and Oscar were the only ones whose entire family (four children, as well as themselves) lived to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversaries. Mattie and Oscar celebrated theirs in 1952, Lloyd and Helen in 1978, Kenneth and Freda in 1979 and Elsie and Dick in 1988.
