FORT PLAIN, NY — Martin "Leonard" Shults, 89, of State Highway 5S, Fort Plain, passed away unexpectedly Saturday evening, May 8, 2004, at his home.

Born in Stone Arabia on March 23, 1915, a son of Martin and Marie Fonda Shults.

He was a lifelong Fort Plain resident and was a graduate of Fort Plain High School.

Mr. Shults worked for over 25 years on the family farm in Fort Plain. He then went to work as a truck driver for over 20 years for Agway in Fort Plain, until his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of the Reformed Church of Fort Plain. He was also a member of the Fort Plain Masonic Lodge No. 433 for over 50 years, and was a former member of the Hallsville Grange.

He married Marianna Lieber Shults on June 6, 1936. She passed away on Jan. 29, 2003. He was also pre-deceased by an infant son, Leonard John Shults, an infant daughter, Annette Marie Shults, and a brother, Charles Shults.

Survivors include two sons, Gary L. Shults and his wife, Helen of Canajoharie, and Manly E. Shults and his wife, Karen of Delhi; two daughters, Sondra Failing of Fort Plain, and Gayle Smith and her husband, Jack of Cooperstown; one brother, Manly Shults of Fort Plain; two sisters, Gertrude Waner of Salem, and Margaret Bollen of Fort Plain; two sisters-in-law, Janet O'Bryan and her husband, JB of Florida, and Doris Stiles of Amsterdam; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Reformed Church, 165 Canal St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Nancy Ryan, presiding. Interment will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

The family received relatives and friends Tuesday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lenz and Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid County Volunteer Ambulance Service, the Reformed Church of Fort Plain or the Masonic Home.
