Mr. Manley Shults, 95, formerly of Nellis Road, Fort Plain, died Friday, January 28, 2005,at the Pleasant Valley Infirmary in Argyle. Born in Stone Arabia on Feb. 3, 1910, he was a son of Martin and Marie Fonda Shults. Mr. Shults was a graduate of Fort Plain High School, class of 1926 and attended Cornell University. He had been a resident of Argyle since 2000. He was a self-employed dairy farmer for his family's farm on Nellis Road in Fort Plain, retiring in 1981. He was a founding member of the Seal and Serpent fraternity at Cornell University in Ithaca. He enjoyed reading, was an accomplished pianist and had a tenor voice. Mr. Shults formed and operated several businesses with his father. He married Virginia Merkley in Cobleskill on Sept. 7, 1939; she died Feb. 4, 1991. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Charles Shults in 2001 and Leonard Shults in 2004. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia L. and Alex Torda of Argyle; two sisters, Gertrude Waner of Salem and Margaret Bollen of Fort Plain; two granddaughters, Elaine Lynn Torda and her husband, Robert Thorburn of Huguenot and Melinda Lee Tougas and her husband, Heath Tougas of Greenfield Center; a great-granddaughter, Mikayla Lee Yougas of Greenfield Center; nieces; nephews and cousins. A 11 a.m. funeral service will be held on Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Hwy. 10, Palatine Bridge with Rev. Gail Wolling and Pastor James Jaekel officiating. Spring burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gray-Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain.
