Winford Eugene Nichols, 81, of Crestwood Road in Collinsville, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Franklin County on July 16, 1931, to Robert Aldine Nichols and Lucy Holt Nichols. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wayne Nichols.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Saipan from 1952 to 1956. He retired from Stone Container Co.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Betty Ruth Kidd Nichols of the home; two sons, Michael Eugene Nichols of Fieldale and Clark Edwin Nichols of Collinsville; three sisters, Gertrude N. Young of Callaway, Nadine N. Sloan of Boones Mill and Shirley N. Mohler of Rocky Mount; four brothers, Robert Sherman Nichols of Copper Hill, James Alton Nichols of Martinsville and Clyde Hylton Nichols and Danny Lee Nichols, both of Bent Mountain; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Roselawn Burial Park with Pastor Tim Nichols officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at McKee-Stone Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
