༻✿ Lester Sterling was the son of Percy and Elva Simpson Sterling. He married Lorraine "Lynn" Margeret Marquardt, date and place unknown at this time. Uncle Les and Aunt Lynn had no children.
Uncle Les served in the army during WW II and received two purple hearts while being wounded in action. He also played the trumpet while in the army. Whenever Uncle Les would play the taps on his trumpet all fighting would cease and a peaceful hush would settle in as everyone would listen to him play his trumpet. When he finished the fighting would begin again. Music is the universal language.
At the age of 15 Uncle Les started working for the Gibson Art Greetings Company to help support the family. He made $26.00 a week. He would send $15.00 home to his mom and kept the rest for his rent and food. After he was out of the army he began his studies in music at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio where he earned his degrees as a musician and as a composer. Uncle Les was a member of the Musician's Union for rearranging music. He played the trumpet for the Tommy Dorsey Band for a short time. He left the band due to health issues concerning his wife. Uncle Les was very artistic and was the color lithographer for the Gibson Art Greeting Company in Ohio. Later when he and his wife moved to Sarasota, Flordia he worked as a lithographer for Sarasota Printing. He was also a professional photographer. He took many photographs of the Ringling Brother's posters and made post cards from these photographs. He sold the postcards 12 per pack and sold them for $1.50 per pack. Post cards at that time mailed for 3 cents, so for less than $2.00 one could mail a note to many people which were also creations of art and beauty.
At the age of 65 Uncle Les died at the Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Florida due to complications which developed from the wounds he had received while serving in WW II.
May he rest in peace in the arms of our Lord. He was a good man and will never be forgotten. He lives on in our hearts.
