༺⊰❁ Percy Lester Sterling was the son of George Edward and Mary Amelia Neaylon Sterling both of Canada, born May 8, 1885 in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, the county of Blenheim in the district of Kent. He had two known brothers William John Sterling who marrie Phoebe Elizabeth Scarf, Leo B. Sterling and one known sister Alma Sterling. His father and an aunt worked for the Hudson Bay Trading Company.
Percy married Almira Jacobs on February 15, 1905 in Marion, Indiana. She was born in Ontario in about 1883. We can find no records concerning his first wife. They had no known children. We believe she passed away.
Percy married Stella J. Pollard Oldham Wharton in 1907, they divorced. No known children. Information provided by Anne member #4 6 9 4 8 9 3 5.
On December 6, 1911 Percy married Cora Etta McClave. The family has said that she gave birth to a son from another man which Percy claimed as his own since they were now married. The marriage was filled with strife therefore Percy left her and moved to Nevada where he was granted a divorce on March 7, 1913 in Nevada, Washoe County.
He served the Nevada National Guard of Infantry, where he was a private in Company A, from June 3, 1912 until June 3, 1913 when he received an Honerable Discharge in Reno, Nevada.
When Percy came to the United States of America he emigrated from Chatham, Ontario, Canada on the Grand Trunk Railroad and arrived at the Port of Buffalo, New York on or about 1903. He renounced forever his allegiance and fidelity to George the V, King of Great Britain and Ireland. He became a citizen of the United States of America on May 31, 1917. He was listed as a machinest.
Percy married Elva Simpson, the love of his heart and soul, on April 9, 1913 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hamilton County. Grandpa Percy and Grandma Elva lived for a time in Indianapolis, Indiana, but for the most part they made their home in Amelia, Ohio where they settled into the community. They had 5 children:
1) Lester Sterling, born September 22, 1914, died October 30, 1979;
2) Mildred Sterling, born November 30, 1916, married Russel Smith and had two children and divorced August 12, 1935, married Owen D. Stockton January 17, 1947 and had 6 children;
3) Bernice Sterling, born April 22, 1921, married Charles Gee and had 4 children;
4) Robert Leroy Sterling, born November 18, 1925, married Nancy Campbell, 1 child, divorced, married Meriel Steinberger, had 2 children, died November 9, 1999;
5) Donald Sterling, born September 13, 1929, married Jean Broch, had 4 children, divorced, and married his beloved Pauline Maxey, no children.
I never had the blessing to know my Grandpa Percy, yet I feel I have always known him from his loving presence and the way family members always spoke fondly of him. He was friends with George Bussmann who married Cora Simpson, the sister of Grandma Elva. They say Grandpa Percy fell in love with Grandma Elva the moment he saw her. He was a kind man and a loving father. He loved electronics and when my dad, Robert Sterling, was little he would always pass the radio tubes to his father, who was ever patient as his little boy searched out the tube he asked for.
Grandpa Percy had spent a very cold night closed in the garage working on the car of a friend, helping his friend out. Because it was so cold that night he kept the doors to the garage closed, even while running the car, as he made repairs and adjustments to his friend's car. Pneumonia settled into his lungs due to the cold temperatures and the carbon monoxide which filled the air of the enclosed garage. He passed away on May 18, 1929 and was buried on May 20, 1929 at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Amelia, Ohio to the right of the round mausoleum. No headstone marks the grave. Only a square cornerstone with an "S" marked on it.
I know it broke the heart of Grandpa Percy to have to leave his beloved Elva, his "Blue Eyed Dearie", and his very loved children behind, but when it is time for one to go God calls us home.
He is loved and missed by the family to this day. His spot was never replaced by someone else. May he always rest in the peace and loving presence of our Lord.
