Francis enlisted on May 27, 1861, at the age of 15, and with the rank of private was mustered into Company I, 10th Georgia Infantry Regiment, of the Confederate Army. Company I, known as the Fayette Rifle Greys or the Fayette Grey Guards, was commanded by Captain Young Wooten, and made up of recruits from Campbell and Fayette counties.

Francis was involved in the following military engagements: Back River, Yorktown, Lee's Mill, Williamsburg, Seven Days Battle, Savage's Station, Southern Mountain, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg. But after having survived so many battles, he fell victim to disease and died at the General Hospital in Farmville, Virginia.
