James is a son of Burrel and Sarah [her maiden name unknown] Bottoms. His father died in 1800, and by 1810 his mother had relocated the family to Camden, Kershaw County, South Carolina.

About 1820, James moved to Jones County, Georgia. There, he married Elizabeth Lockhart on September 6, 1821. They have 8 children: 2 boys and 6 girls. In 1825, he moved to Pike County, Georgia. Between 1827 and 1837, he purchased various parcels of land and labored as a farmer. After his wife died in 1839, he married Eliza McElroy Hartsfield on January 22, 1840, in Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia. They have 8 children: 5 boys and 3 girls.

In 1859, he moved his family to Fayette County, Georgia, where he spent his remaining years. He purchased land for his home and his farm. But, he probably didn't work the land much himself. His health was in decline and he was suffering from kidney problems.

The Civil War began and his sons George and Francis enlisted. Francis died in 1863 from disease, and George was wounded and later captured. In 1865, only one of his two boys returned from the war.
