Mr. Hanson was born on February 4, 1940 in Douglas, North Dakota to Joy A. and Lillian Larson Hanson (who died on September 1, 1944 when he was only four years old). His father re-married soon after and the family subsequently moved to Isanti County, Minnesota.
At a young age he joined the Navy and was in the military for many years. He served in the Navy in the Vietnam War. On July 25, 1960 he married Freddie Carol Klutts, and they had three children. After their divorce, the children were adopted and raised by their maternal grandparents in Mississippi. Gerald subsequently married Carol Taylor on February 14, 1976. They had no children and later divorced.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Hanson Klutts and Kathrene Hanson Klutts and a son,Maisel Hanson Klutts, all of Mississippi; four sisters, Joyce Carter of Miles, Koreen Gerdin of Bethel, Minnesota, Delores Feldman of Diamond Bar, California, and JoAnn Heckenlaible, of Lodi, California; and a brother, Richard Hanson of Des Moines. Arrangements were handled by Highland Park Funeral Home. The body was cremated and the ashes were later buried at the family plot at the Gerdin Cemetery in rural Isanti County, Minnesota.
