Klint Wesley Safford, age 52, of 500 Lincoln Avenue, Iron River, died unexpectedly Wednesday (August 13) at his home of complications from diabetes.
He was born October 28, 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan, the son of Thomas and Georgianna (Chisholm) Safford and moved to Rapid River in 1956 with his family.
He graduated as valedictorian of his class from Rapid River High School in 1969 and then attended Michigan State University where he received a B.S. degree in Parks and Recreation.
While in college he was training to become a Michigan State Park Ranger/Manager and worked summer months at Porcupine Mountain, Baraga, Fayette, and Pinckney State Parks. His first job following college was with the City of Inkster, Michigan in the Parks and Recreation Department and later as Assistant City Manager.
In 1974 he moved to the local area and was hired as the City Manager of Iron River. He became a trainee agent for State Farm Insurance Company in 1980 and then was self-employed as an agent for the company until retiring in June 2002 due to health disability.
Klint was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Active in local politics, he was currently serving on the Iron River City Commission and had served as Mayor of Iron River in 1989. He enjoyed sports and had played in various local independent leagues. He had been a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Iron County, the Iron River Elks Lodge, and had been the local coordinator for the Iron County Ultreya in the mid 1980's.
On March 18, 1972 he married the former Dale Anne Griffin of Midland, Michigan.
He is survived by his wife Dale; sons Sam and Luke at home; daughters Sandy, a student at St. Scholastica College in Duluth, Minnesota, and Jackie and Holly, both students at Michigan Technological University; his parents Thomas and Georgianna Safford of Rapid River; 3 brothers, Tom (Alice) Safford of Carney, Duke (Kris) Safford of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Sim (Martha) Safford of Kohler, Wisconsin; 3 sisters, Cindy (Pete) Brock of Hillman, Michigan, Jen (Dane) Harvey of Maryland, and Rev. Susan Gaul of Brillion, Wisconsin; his father-in-law Jack (Ruby) Griffin of Armenia, Colombia; his mother-in-law Marie Ann (Robert) Griffin Zimmerman of Midland; a brother-in-law Craig Griffin of Lyons, Illinois, and sisters-in-law Jill (Ed) Martin of Midland and Rachel Anger of Wayne.
Friends may call Sunday (August 17) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Langenberg Funeral Home-Iron River Chapel. Funeral services will be held Monday (August 18) at 11 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iron River. The Rev. James Fegan, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.

His favorite hymn "Here I Am Lord" was sung by his children, Sandy, Jackie, Holly, Sam, and Luke and son Sam played "Amazing Grace" on the French horn. Organist was Diane Quayle, and congregational hymn selection was "When We All Get To Heaven". Personal tributes were spoken by sisters, Rev. Susan Gaul and Jenny Harvey and sister-in-law Alice Safford. Pallbearers were Gary Pisoni, George and Vern Treado, Terry and David Tarsi, Virgil Thompson and Bernie Sacheck. Interment was in the Resthaven Cemetery. He was the son of Thomas and Georgianna (Chisholm) Safford of Rapid River.

TELL A FUNNY STORY ABOUT YOURSELF: When I was in the fifth grade, we were gathering firewood for the fireplace. A log fell down and pinched my thumb against another log, cutting the end of my thumb off. When we called the doctor, he told us to find the end of the finger so he could sew it back on. We couldn't find it because some fresh snow had fallen. In the spring my brothers and I found a glove at the scene. When I put my hand in it, there was the end of my thumb.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT, KLINT. I have another one...when I was in the second grade, I took my dad's hatchet...
I DON'T KNOW IF WE WANT TO HEAR THIS. No, this is okay. I took the hatchet and girded a nice maple in the yard. When my dad found out, he asked me who did it and why. I said I did, and I wanted to see how sharp the hatchet was. For my honesty, I got a belt lickin' with my brothers watching. I often think of what George Washington really got when he chopped down that cherry tree.

We couldn't find it because some fresh snow had fallen. In the spring my brothers and I found a glove at the scene. When I put my hand in it, there was the end of my thumb.

I DON'T KNOW IF WE WANT TO HEAR THIS. No, this is okay. I took the hatchet and girded a nice maple in the yard. When my dad found out, he asked me who did it and why. I said I did, and I wanted to see how sharp the hatchet was. For my honesty, I got a belt lickin' with my brothers watching. I often think of what George Washington really got when he chopped down that cherry tree.

Klint Wesley Safford, age 52, of 500 Lincoln Avenue, Iron River, died unexpectedly Wednesday (August 13) at his home of complications from diabetes.
He was born October 28, 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan, the son of Thomas and Georgianna (Chisholm) Safford and moved to Rapid River in 1956 with his family.
He graduated as valedictorian of his class from Rapid River High School in 1969 and then attended Michigan State University where he received a B.S. degree in Parks and Recreation.
While in college he was training to become a Michigan State Park Ranger/Manager and worked summer months at Porcupine Mountain, Baraga, Fayette, and Pinckney State Parks. His first job following college was with the City of Inkster, Michigan in the Parks and Recreation Department and later as Assistant City Manager.
In 1974 he moved to the local area and was hired as the City Manager of Iron River. He became a trainee agent for State Farm Insurance Company in 1980 and then was self-employed as an agent for the company until retiring in June 2002 due to health disability.
Klint was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Active in local politics, he was currently serving on the Iron River City Commission and had served as Mayor of Iron River in 1989. He enjoyed sports and had played in various local independent leagues. He had been a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Iron County, the Iron River Elks Lodge, and had been the local coordinator for the Iron County Ultreya in the mid 1980's.
On March 18, 1972 he married the former Dale Anne Griffin of Midland, Michigan.
He is survived by his wife Dale; sons Sam and Luke at home; daughters Sandy, a student at St. Scholastica College in Duluth, Minnesota, and Jackie and Holly, both students at Michigan Technological University; his parents Thomas and Georgianna Safford of Rapid River; 3 brothers, Tom (Alice) Safford of Carney, Duke (Kris) Safford of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Sim (Martha) Safford of Kohler, Wisconsin; 3 sisters, Cindy (Pete) Brock of Hillman, Michigan, Jen (Dane) Harvey of Maryland, and Rev. Susan Gaul of Brillion, Wisconsin; his father-in-law Jack (Ruby) Griffin of Armenia, Colombia; his mother-in-law Marie Ann (Robert) Griffin Zimmerman of Midland; a brother-in-law Craig Griffin of Lyons, Illinois, and sisters-in-law Jill (Ed) Martin of Midland and Rachel Anger of Wayne.
Friends may call Sunday (August 17) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Langenberg Funeral Home-Iron River Chapel. Funeral services will be held Monday (August 18) at 11 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iron River. The Rev. James Fegan, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.

Funeral services for Klint Wesley Safford, who died Aug. 13, were conducted by the Rev. James Fegan at Wesley United Methodist Church. Musical selections "In the Garden" and "Abide With Me" were sung by Bill Harris and Mel Greenlund. His favorite hymn "Here I Am Lord" was sung by his children, Sandy, Jackie, Holly, Sam, and Luke and son Sam played "Amazing Grace" on the French horn. Organist was Diane Quayle, and congregational hymn selection was "When We All Get To Heaven". Personal tributes were spoken by sisters, Rev. Susan Gaul and Jenny Harvey and sister-in-law Alice Safford. Pallbearers were Gary Pisoni, George and Vern Treado, Terry and David Tarsi, Virgil Thompson and Bernie Sacheck. Interment was in the Resthaven Cemetery. He was the son of Thomas and Georgianna (Chisholm) Safford of Rapid River.

The family of Klint Safford would like to thank all the wonderful people who expressed sympathy to us at the time of his death. We are thankful to those who brought food, sent flowers or cards, or offered prayers, but more than anything we are grateful for your words of support which were a comfort to us. We are especially grateful to the United Methodist Women who prepared and served the luncheon, and to Terry Langenberg and his staff who handled the funeral arrangements in a way that eased our worries. Klint cared deeply about this community, and it was wonderful to see that the community also cared about him and his family. Your thoughtfulness and kindness will never, ever be forgotten.
