RAPID RIVER-Thomas "Tom" Weisend Safford, age 79, was born June 26, 1929, in Saginaw, Mich., and died peacefully, May 4, 2009, at his farm home in Rapid River, surrounded by his loving family.
Tom is the son of Elmer Safford and Winifred (Westbrook) Safford, both of Saginaw and both deceased.
He is survived by his wife, Georgianna "Georgie" (Chisholm) Safford; daughter, Cindy (Pete) Brock of Rapid River, MI; son, Thomas W. (Alice) Safford II of Carney, MI; daughter, Jenny Safford of Nottingham, Maryland; daughter, Rev. Susan (Mike) Safford-Gaul of Brillion, WI; son, Sim (Martha) Safford of Kohler, WI; daughters-in-law Dale Safford of Iron River, MI and Kris Safford of Mullet Lake, MI.
Preceding him in death were his sons, Klint Safford and Daniel "Duke" Safford.
In addition, survivors include sixteen grandchildren, Amy Smith of Gladstone, MI; Greta Brock of Boyne City, MI; Liz Hansen of Rapid River, MI; Jill Latta of Jacksonville, Fl; Sara Leigh-Manuell of Cincinnati, OH; Meggie Safford of Miami, Fl; Sandy Safford of Cheboygan, MI; Jackie and Holly Safford of Houghton, MI; Sam Safford of Ypsilanti, MI; Luke Safford of Marquette, MI; Erich Gaul of Madison, WI; Jason Gaul of Brillion, WI; Annette "Georgie" Gaul of Oshkosh, WI; Rachel and Maria Safford of Kohler, WI; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
One granddaughter, Angela Mae Safford of Carney, MI preceded him in death as well as his sisters Helen Myers of Wilton, Iowa and Jane Nankee of Midland, MI.
After graduation from Arthur Hill High School in 1947, Tom received an Associate Degree in Forestry from Bay City Junior College.
Tom's first employment was with Sears Roebuck followed by a career with Michigan's Department of Natural Resources where he served in law and fire divisions.
Tom was a skilled craftsman, avid sportsman and engaging storyteller.
He married his high school sweetheart Georgie, and they recently celebrated sixty-one years of marriage on March 27.
Tom's family will receive friends on Friday May 8, 2009, from 4:00PM to 8:00PM, at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Visiting hours will continue on Saturday, May 9, 2009, from 10:00AM to 11:00AM, at the Congregational Church in Rapid River. Funeral services celebrating the life of Thomas "Tom" Weisend Safford will follow visitation, at 11:00AM, at the Rapid River Congregational Church with Pastor William Rafuse officiating. Sharing in the funeral services will be Tom's family. Committal rites will immediately follow funeral services at the Rapid River Cemetery. Luncheon will be served, following committal rites, at the Rapid River Congregational Church Fellowship Hall. All are invited and welcome to attend. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Rapid River Congregational Church, P.O. Box 369, Rapid River, MI 49878 or the Upper Peninsula Foster Grandparent Program Foundation, P.O. Box 194, Rapid River, MI 49878. Envelopes will be available throughout visitation and funeral services.
