Dorothy was born in Fort Collins, the youngest of four children. She attended Fort Collins High School until 1926, when her father died unexpectedly and she had to go to work to help support her mother. She worked at the local movie theater and the library. She married Dwayne Todd, who was in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1941 in Yuma, Arizona. They had two children, Patty b.1947 in Fort Collins CO and Mike b. 1953, while they were stationed in Panama. She enjoyed traveling and seeing the world as a military family.

Dorothy was cremated and her ashes were scattered over the San Jacinto mountains in Southern California, as per her wishes.
