A man of high standards who loved his country and family deeply.
Dwayne was the 2nd child of three born to Charles and Jeanette Todd. He had an older brother, Orie, and a younger sister, Irene. He was born in Ft. Morgan, Colorado. His father served as chief of police in Ft. Morgan and after that, as a railroad special agent in Alliance, Nebraska. In 1926 the family moved to Ft. Collins where Dwayne's parents operated the Plum St. Grocery for 20 years. The grocery was on the main floor and the living quarters were on the 2nd floor. The family moved around the corner to 818 Peterson St. when the grocery store sold.
He began his military career in 1930-1939 serving in the U.S. National Guard in Colorado. In 1939-1945 he was in the U.S. Army Air Force Corps. He and Dorothy "Dottie" Fleming were married in 1941 in Yuma Arizona and she was by his side until her death in 1983.
He separated from the military from 1945-1950 and returned to Ft. Collins, CO. He sold cars, drove taxi, and managed a gas station. Dwayne was always making, creating, or restoring vehicles. He bought land and built a midget race car track at the north end of Ft. Collins. He was president of and partial owner of Speedway Park and raced midget race cars and stock cars from the mid 1940's to the early 1950's
He then re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served for a total of 22 years, retiring as SMSGT in 1966. He received the Soldier's Medal of Valor for his heroism in saving a man from a crashed and burning F86 jet fighter in 1956.
After retirement from the U.S. Air Force he was a foreman at John E. Lindberg., Inc. assembly plant in Berkley CA from 1966-1969, Douglas gas station owner in Fairfield CA from 1969-1971, & C.H.P. automotive specialist at the Solano C.H.P. office from 1972-1985. He met and married his "2nd love", Arlene Farley and they lived in Fairfield until his death in 1997.
Dwayne had two children, Patty Todd Hudson (1947-still living) and Michael O. Todd, b. 1953 while he was stationed in Panama. Tragically, he lost his son Michael in 1990 to strep pneumonia.
In his later years he enjoyed restoring old cars, recalling his military career and watching the "big birds" fly over from Travis Air Force Base.
Rest in peace Dad, now you are on the best flight of all! We all miss you.
