M. B. Challand Rimbey oldtimer dies at 84 - Funeral services were to be held Tuesday for Merton B. Challand of Rimbey who died Saturday in the Red Deer General Hospital. He was 84. Mr. Challand was bom at Rolf, Iowa April 7, 1890 and came to Canada in 1905. He married the former Sarah Phena Shoup Jan. 15, 1913 at Leedale. A year later the couple started farming in the Lacombe district until 1917 when they moved to a farm in the Bentley district. They farmed .there until 1946, when they retired to Lacombe. In 1948 they moved to Rimbey where he lived until the time of his death. During his retirement Mr. Challand spent many hours doing carpentry work in the community. Mr. Challand was predeceased by three sisters, a brother, a son and a grandson. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Irene Hunter of Rimbey and Vera Simpson of Lacombe. Seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive. The services were to be conducted from the Rimbey Church of the Nazarene with Rev. R. T. Sellick of Rimbey officiating. Burial was to follow in the family plot at the Bentley cemetery.
