J.P. was the son of Abraham and Filydia (or Phila) Barnas Laymon. He married Margarette Watson on February 1, 1870 in Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE. They were the parents of: Charles Elmer, David Abraham, James "Oscar", Henry Allen and Addie May.

Aged Iolan Had Been Bedfast With
Malady for a Year.
James R. Layman, died at 10:30 o'clock last night at the family home, 1309 N. Sycamore, after an illness of two years with cancer. For the past year, Mr. Layman had been unable to leave his bed.
He is survived by a family of four sons, Charles E., David A., James O., and Henry A. Layman and a daughter Mrs. I. Cuppy. His wife died six years ago. Funeral service will be held at the family home Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
Mr. Layman came here with his family from Jewell county in 1894 and has lived in the city of Iola since 1898.
