HINGHAM — Daryl Rodney Spicher, 61, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at his farm home north of Hingham due to lung cancer.

Vigil prayers were held at Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church in Hingham. Funeral Mass was at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial followed at the Hingham Cemetery.

Daryl was born Feb. 10, 1940, at Havre to Rodney and Hildegarde (Gehlen) Spicher. He grew up on the family farm near Hingham and received his formal education there. During his school years, he received his nickname, "Lightning," which complimented his personality throughout his life. He graduated from Hingham High School in 1958 and began his career as a Montana dryland farmer.

Daryl married his best friend, Joyce Mangold, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Inverness on Oct. 14, 1961. They lived and raised their family on the Spicher farm two miles south of Hingham. The home was the same that Daryl was raised in and held special special memories for the couple during their 40 years of married life together.

Daryl was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church in Hingham. He continued his membership there and was active in the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Havre Elks Club.

Daryl was a dedicated farmer and was pleased to have been a Hi-Line pioneer in no-till farming practices.

Daryl enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and traveling. He loved to fly, whether behind the yoke of his Champ or on the handles of a remote control airplane. He also enjoyed photography, stained glass art and computers. In his quiet time, he read and watched TV quiz shows. He also enjoyed spending his free time socializing and drinking coffee with friends. His family was his greatest love and he was extremely proud of his sons and his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Daryl Joseph; sister, Lynne; his in-laws, Joe and Amelia Mangold.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce of Hingham; sons, Dan (Julie) of Conrad and Robert (Jackie) of Hingham; brother, Bill of Hingham; sisters, Charlene Bibler and Gail Meyer, both of Great Falls; five grandchildren; lifelong friend and mentor, Dewey Dolezal of Polson; numerous nieces and nephews.
