Genevieve Lillian Sherman's place of birth is unclear. Census records indicate that she was born in Brooklyn, New York, but so far no record of her birth has been found. She was the daughter of Henry Sherman and his first wife, Mary Jane (maiden name unknown). After her mother's death, her father remarried and sired another daughter, Laura. He died when Jennie was seven and Laura three. The girls were then raised by Genevieve's stepmother (Laura's biological mother), and both girls' stepfather, James W. Hulburt.

The blended family moved to Illinois, where Jennie met and married Florus DeWitt Fitch. A few years later, Jennie, Florus, and their young daughter, Blanche Monolo, traveled by wagon to Gage County, Nebraska. They stayed near Beatrice about a year before moving on to Spring Creek Township, Nebraska, where they homesteaded. Blanche died shortly after their arrival.

In addition to Blanche, Jennie gave birth to four children: Claude Sherman, Arthur Dewitt, Laura Alice, and Orlo Vivian.

When Florus retired from farming in 1917, Jennie and Florus moved to Atlanta, Nebraska. They lived in Atlanta until she required more help as she aged than Florus was able to give. The decision was made to move in with their son Arthur's family in Missouri. At the age of 82 years, 8 months, and 18 days, Jennie died at Arthur's home of a stroke. Her body was transported back to Nebraska for burial next to her daughter Blance, who had died of Scarlet Fever shortly before she would have turned five. Florus returned to Nebraska, where he lived until his death about six years later.
