Florus DeWitt, born in Illinois, was the son of Cynthia Longmore and Charles DeWitt Fitch. His daughter told this biographer tha Florus and a brother owned a general store in Olney and sold out in order to homestead in Nebraska. However, census records indicate that Florus was a clerk in the store, not the owner. Whatever the case, he, his wife, Genevieve, and young daughter, Blanche, made the trek to Gage County, Nebraska, by flatbed wagon. To help friends (who, as it turned out, were an uncle by marriage and his second wife) the young family remained in Gage County near Beatrice for a year or so. Their second child was born there. After continuing on to Nebraska, Florus and his family homesteaded at Spring Creek Township, Phelps County, Nebraska. Initially they lived in a sod house that Florus built. After years of farming, he and his wife retired to Atlanta, Nebraska, where he died at the advanced age of 95 years and 13 days. He is buried beside his wife and daughter, Blanche, who died at a young age.
